I've tried everything (except for the big waterwheel which which begins with "T", that I cannot afford anyway). I've settled with Japanese waterstones. They do cut fast and flattening every once in a while only takes 30 seconds. My last purchase was a DiaSharp extra extra fine diamond plate. I sold it.<br /> I strop constantly - a few swipes does nothing to slow work down. I find that this precludes the need to sharpen much at all. I can go weeks before I will take a chisel to my 4000 then 8000 stone. I only do that freehand, so it takes only a minute or two every couple of weeks. <br /> I also use Autosol for stroping. <br /><br /> --Wm.
